Snow Loading

What It Is - The accumulation of snow on a house or other building can create a weight that may cause damage or even the collapse of the roof.

How Much - Each structure is different, varying with structural strength of your roof, pitch of the roof, and the surface texture of the roof. Some roofs will hold the snow more so than others. One foot of snow can weigh up as much as 24 lbs. per square foot, depending on the water content percentage. Ice weighs up to 60 lbs per cubic foot.

What To Do - Use the SNO-knife to remove the snow from your roof each time it snows, or, if ice dams are not a problem, you can allow some snow to accumulate and then use the SNO-knife. Ice Dams

What They Are - Ice dams are accumulations of ice and snow at the eaves of house roofs.

What Causes It - They are caused by a loss of heat from the living space of a house that heats the deck of the roof. The heat melts the snow higher up on the roof, and the water trickles down to the roof's eaves, which are cooler and not affected by the heat loss. Here, the water re-freezes and creates this build-up of ice.

What They Do - The ice dams block this flow of melted snow and cause the water to seep up the roof, under the roofing, and into the house, causing damage to paint, paneling and drywall.

What To Do The best way to deal with ice dams is to prevent them. Re-evaluating the construction of your home and upgrading features such as; attic insulation, attic ventilation, sealing openings from the living space to the attic, and installing or improving soffit vents.
